A group of talented Salford students have recently competed in Formula Student 2016 at Silverstone; the home of British Motor Racing. The team were competing for the first time ever and achieved some fantastic results!
Formula Student is Europe's most established educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Backed by industry and high profile engineers, the competition aims to inspire and develop enterprising and innovative young engineers. Universities from across the globe are challenged to design and build a single-seat racing car across a range of Events, which demonstrate their understanding and test the performance of the vehicle.
Our aptly named “Formula Salford” team competed in the international competition’s Class 2 events. Class 2 events are ‘static’ meaning they are for teams without a functioning car. The events consist of a Design Event, a Cost Event and a Business Presentation Event; all fundamental aspects of the design and manufacturing industry. Many teams compete for years at a Class 2 level before bringing their actual cars to compete at a Class 1 level.
The Formula Salford Team gained the points to finish 18th out of the 34 teams who competed at Class 2, making them the 5th best placed University team from the UK! The team also ranked 2nd out of all UK University teams in the Business Event; displaying outstanding business understanding and knowledge of car design and production.
After a great first year showing, the team are already looking to maintain the momentum for next year’s competition and entering a Class 1 car!
