Student shopping

If you are new to Salford, or even to the UK, it might be hard to pick out the best places to get value for your money.

Convenience is great, but it will cost you if you are always filling your cupboard from the student shop.

Here's our TOP 3 tips for shopping for food on a budget, that should help you eat well for less!

1. Buy supermarket own-brand products…

... or just not the first one you recognise. Lots of the other bands are just as good or better than the ones you know. Sometimes the only difference is the price. At Tesco, a can of Heinz beans costs ÂŁ1.20, compared to the budget brand at 27p!

2. Plan your meals before going to the supermarket…

... because it’s so easy to just throw everything that looks tasty in the basket!

If you have an idea of what you want to cook, you can make sure you get everything you need and don’t double up on things you’ve already got sat in the cupboard.

3. Treat yourself…

Some days, you might not feel like cooking for scratch, or you’ll get craving for sweets and treats. The occasional supermarket ready meal will probably be cheaper than a takeaway!

But where to shop in Salford?

If you're not sure where to go shopping, Salford Centre is within easy reach of campus. There you can find a Tesco and an Aldi, both great budget supermarkets.

The number 50 bus, operated by Stagecoach, runs every 10-15 minutes past the University’s main Peel Park campus, to Salford Shopping Centre, and then on to Media City.

And you can travel on the 50 between Peel Park and Media City for free, just by showing your student ID!
