Hi! Welcome to USSU BSL Society.
Our aim is to encourage people to learn British Sign Language, as we believe that it is a skill everyone should be able to draw upon. Not only is it a beautiful, under-studied language, but knowing even a little helps to reduce the isolation that people in the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) community experience in everyday life.
We would also love to be a place where those who are D/deaf or HoH or users of BSL feel welcome and can come to meet like-minded individuals, and make new friends who are working hard to learn to effectively communicate with the D/deaf and HoH community
I have no BSL knowledge/experience. Can I still join?
Of course! We aim to create a space where anyone interested in learning about and getting involved in D/deaf culture and BSL, regardless of how much you know or what your skill level is!
When do you meet?
For the time being, we have set our meeting day to Wednesday afternoons. Due to the different timetabling this year thanks to that pesky virus, we want to let our members decide what day we meet, so it might change. We will be chatting to our members after all welcome events are over to find out which day and time is best. For at least the first semester, all of our meetings will be online
What about Socials?
This year, we are hoping that our members will join us in forming a team for the SU Quiz that runs on Monday evenings in Atmosphere. This is, of course, subject to government guidelines and the restrictions that the SU puts in place to keep students safe on campus. There will undoubtedly be more opportunities for socials as the year goes on, and we will chat with you about them in our meetings
Will I be taught BSL?
The BSL society isn't a class or course. Our aim instead is to provide our members with the materials and opportunities to get involved in D/deaf culture, meet like-minded people also interested in learning BSL, and encourage you to learn some sign independently and practice with your fellow members. The committee will help and support you as much as possible whilst you learn
Who can join?
Anybody! We expect all of our members to be accepting and inclusive of everyone. Our society is a safe space for everybody!
How will you contact me?
There are a couple of ways we might get in touch with you. For important member updates, we will probably send you an email. Otherwise, you can find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram where we will post more general updates, helpful information, and upcoming events
