As the buzz of student elections fills the air, it's essential to reflect on the impact our current Student Union (SU) officers have made throughout the year.

From advocating for student rights to spearheading transformative initiatives, these dedicated individuals have tirelessly worked to enhance the student experience.

In anticipation of the upcoming elections... let's delve into the top 5 remarkable accomplishments our SU officers have achieved for us this year!

1. Discrimination on Placements Campaign

Officers have been engaging with key stakeholders to tackle discrimination students face when on work placements.

Students have reached out various times and under a variety of circumstances to echo their perceived discrimination when simply on placement to secure valuable opportunities and experience.

Talks to understand what the issues are, and information of support to those we need it, have been shared.

2. Securing funding for Academic Societies

Societies are a big part of student life and can contribute massively to the full university experience; making new friends, hobbies and learning something new!

Officers have actively been supporting the new growth and funding in academic societies to foster a vibrant and inclusive campus community for all.

3. Cost of Living Campaign

The SU officers implemented a comprehensive financial support package during the 2023-24 academic year, offering targeted bursaries, assistance for students in financial difficulty, financial wellbeing resources, and on-campus discounts.

This initiative aimed to alleviate financial stress, improve students' financial wellbeing, and enhance their academic success.

4. Islamophobia Awareness Month

A campaign was created for Islamophobia Awareness Month, featuring events and workshops to combat discrimination.

It culminated in a fig tree planting ceremony symbolising growth and prosperity for the future, marking a historic moment in fostering inclusivity and understanding within the university community.

5. Celebrating Black History Month

The university's Black History Month celebration was a dynamic and memorable event that served as the centrepiece of the month-long initiative.

It brought together students, faculty, and staff in a vibrant display of unity and cultural appreciation.

The highlight of the celebration was a grand showcase featuring performances by Black artists, and through poems, music and visual arts, attendees were immersed in the richness and diversity of Black creativity and expression.

The event provided a powerful platform for fostering connections, sharing stories, and celebrating the profound impact of Black culture on the university community and beyond.

So that rounds up the top 5 achievements our officers have successfully worked on so far this year.

If you are one to make change, have an array of ideas and want to contribute to improving university life for our students, make sure to nominate yourself as an officer and start your journey with us! 🤗
