Start a Society

We're still taking on new societies, even during a pandemic! 

If you have an idea for a society that is not currently offered by the Students' Union, you have come to the right place! The chances are that if you have an interest in something, there are others out there with the same interest. Our student-led societies are designed to offer opportunities for their member and all Salford students; through putting on regular meetings, arranging workshops and exhibitions, planning trips and excursions, and much more! The Students' Union is here to help you get started, it is a very simple process and there is help every step of the way.

All of our societies are student-led. While staff, students form other institutions, and alumni can join societies, only current students at the University of Salford can start and run societies. 

Once you submit your form you will be contacted by a Union staff member.

Please note that while we are still able to affiliate societies during the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be restrictions on initial activity. 

What are some of the benefits of affiliating a society to the Students' Union?

  • Full-time staff support to help you put on your events, campaigns, and other activities. 
  • Page on our website will all our other groups. 
  • Free stall at our Welcome Fair (value £1500)

  • Promotion and marketing

Please note, any forms submitted after 1st September 2020 will be seen to after Welcome, so you can expect a response early October.

Submit your society:

Use the form on the right to to begin the process by submitting your idea with some information about the society you would like to set up.

Meet with the Student Opportunities Coordinator:

Once the form has been submitted it will be sent to our Student Opportunities Coordinator. The coordinator will be in contact to arrange a meeting to discuss the idea further and talk you through starting your Society.

Complete the start up documents (they are very short and we're here to help!):

After meeting with the Student Opportunities Coordinator and deciding on how to start up your society, you will be sent an email outlining what you need to do next as well as information on completing relevant affiliation forms. We have templates for all these so the hard work is complete. We just need you to complete the fun parts! 

Recruit your members:

Once the society is up and running you will get a page on our website where members will be able to sign up.

Attend training: 

Running a society can be daunting at first, so we will put you through training to help you along. This includes finance, recruitment, events, marketing, and much more. You'll also meet with your coordinator for a development meeting once a semester to see how your society is coming along and if you need any extra help.

You’ve done it! You have now created a new society from scratch – celebrate this at your first meeting and enjoy the rest of the year, it’s going to be great! Don’t forget we will be here for support whenever you need it - even if everything is going well we still want to hear from you so we can help promote your Society and any events you're planning!
